1997, video, 17 minutes, color/sound

Pasang Naik challenges cultural assumptions about ethnography and tourism, using a continuous strand of “in-camera fades” (all done in the moment of filming) in Southeast Asia to inhibit touristic narratives and interpretations of an Orientalist cast. Travel thus becomes a rapt and faulty stare, a theater whose drama is ‘picturesquely’ inarticulate, solely observable, an opera whose image or story dies into the music.
